History
The population of Malaysia is 33.2 million, an increase of 1.6 percent as compared to the first quarter of 2022 (32.6 million). The total population comprised 30.4 million (91.7%) citizens and 2.8 million (8.3%). Non-Citizens. As of July 2022, 69.9 percent of the Malaysian population were classified as Malays, 22.8 percent were classified as ethnic Chinese, and 6.6 percent were classified as ethnic Indians. Based on the statistics, the number of poor people is higher among ethnic Indians. Many Indian children cannot afford to further their studies due to their parent’s monthly incomes. Most Indian parents are facing financial issues and can’t afford to proceed with their future. This might have a huge impact on them. More than 10,000 drop out before reaching SPM, and the community must assist. 76% of Tamil school students are from B40 families.
Moreover, some of the Tamil schools in our country have fewer facilities. Some schools didn’t have blackboards, whiteboards, smart boards, food facilities, and many more things. The same goes for the children who are studying at the school. Children have no money to buy food in the canteen due to their parent’s monthly incomes. Some of the parents do not have enough money to give to their children, and this causes their children to skip their meals during break times.
To reduce or overcome all these causes, Mr. Jayashangkar has formed an NGO to help the poor and increase the infrastructure of the Tamil schools. The name of the NGO that was formed by Mr. Jayashangkar is Olivilaku. Why was the name Olivilakku chosen? Be a shining light for the poor, especially B40 families. Olivilaku was formed on February 15, 2022. Olivilaku has a number of members who will work with each other to help the poor and increase the infrastructure of the Tamil schools.
